Connect the Lexeri MCP server to GitHub Copilot

Guide6 stepsGitHub Copilot in VS Code

This guide shows how to set up the Lexeri MCP server in GitHub Copilot manually. GitHub Copilot Chat then works directly with your Lexeri termbase – for example to look up terms, check texts for terminology violations or create new term suggestions.

Prerequisites

  • Visual Studio Code 1.99 or later with the GitHub Copilot extension installed
  • An active GitHub Copilot subscription
  • A Lexeri account with at least one termbase
  • A valid Lexeri API token from the settings of your termbase
  • Once: admin rights in the GitHub organization to enable MCP for everyone

Step 1: Enable MCP servers in the GitHub organization

Administration

An administrator of the GitHub organization does this once. Without it, members can’t use MCP servers in GitHub Copilot – even if their local configuration is correct.

  1. Open the Copilot policies of the organization: https://github.com/organizations/YOUR-ORGANIZATION/settings/copilot/policies
  2. In the Policies section, find the setting MCP servers in Copilot.
  3. Set it to Enabled and save.

Step 2: Open or create the MCP configuration file

In VS Code, open the Command Palette with Ctrl+Shift+P (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Shift+P (macOS) and run this command:

> MCP: Open User Configuration File

VS Code opens the file mcp.json in your user directory. If it doesn’t exist yet, VS Code creates it.

Step 3: Configure the Lexeri MCP server

Add this entry to your mcp.json:

mcp.json
{  "servers": {    "lexeri": {      "type": "http",      "url": "https://mcp.lexeri.com/mcp"    }  }}

Save the file with Ctrl+S or Cmd+S.

Step 4: Connect to the MCP server

Once you save, a Start link appears in the file above the name "lexeri". Click it to configure the MCP server.

Step 5: Start the MCP server in VS Code

Open the Command Palette again and run:

> MCP: List Servers

lexeri appears in the list. Select it, then choose Start Server. A green icon shows that the connection is up.

Step 6: Use the Lexeri tools in GitHub Copilot Chat

Open Copilot Chat via the chat icon or with Ctrl+Alt+I or Cmd+Alt+I. Select Agent mode (not “Ask” or “Edit”) and check under the tools icon that the Lexeri tools are available.

Example prompts

  • Search my Lexeri termbase for the term “Renewable Energy”.
  • Check the following text for terminology violations against my Lexeri termbase.
  • Create a term suggestion for the term “Carbon Footprint” in Lexeri.
